Don’t have the time and money for major renovations? Try some of these mini but mighty home improvement projects. They might not cost a lot, but they’ll make a major difference in the look and feel of your house!

  1. Make your entrance inviting—Freshen up your first impression. Give your front door a fresh coat of cheery paint and replace your old welcome mat. Brighten up the area by adding new lighting, and potted place near the entrance. Build a brick or stone path leading up to your doorway.
  2. Dress up your patio—Add potted plants, seating, and lighting to create a charming backyard getaway. If your patio is discolored from dirt and grime, consider giving it a power wash.

  3. Add an accent wall—An accent wall is a great way to break away from the monotony of all four walls being painted the same color. Use an accent wall to draw your eye to a particular part of the room. You can use bright paint for the accent wall with more neutral colors for the three other walls, or use a neutral on the accent with the other walls in a bold color—just be sure to use complementary colors. Even use a bold pattern or unique wallpaper for the accent wall to give the room some added flare.
  4. Give your kitchen cabinets a facelift—A little bit of paint can go a long way in transforming the look and feel of your kitchen cabinets. You can also replace your old cabinet and drawer handles with new or unique pieces that will add to your unique style.
  5. Install new faucets—Give your kitchen and bathroom sinks a makeover by adding a new, elegant faucet.
  6. Add a ceiling fan—Save energy by adding ceiling fans in your bedrooms and living areas. The fans will help save energy on the days where all you need is a light breeze to keep cool.
  7. Re-tile your floor—Modernize your flooring by updating your tile to match your personal style and compliment your décor. Old tile not only looks outdated, but it can also look dirty due to buildup and discolored grout. Clean your grout with a stiff nylon brush and a strong degreaser. If your grout is beyond saving, replace the grout.
  8. Install a new shower head—Choose a low-flow unit to save money on your water bill each month. Or, turn your shower into your own personal spa by upgrading to a luxury showerhead.
  9. Redo your kitchen backsplash—Use popular subway or ceramic tiles to modernize your kitchen backsplash. If you’re on a budget, try using a more untraditional medium like tin ceiling tile or wallpaper. Replacing your backsplash doesn’t take a professional, and there are even several ways to redo a backsplash right over your old one.

  10. Install a new garage door—If your garage door is old and outdated, a new garage door will add to the safety, security, and appearance of your house. While a garage door can range in price, the average garage door costs around $1,652. It might sound pricey, but it will help add value to your home.
  11. Add an island to your kitchen—Islands not only look appealing, but they also add to the functionality of your kitchen. Custom select the size, layout, and materials of your island or buy a wholesale island or table instead. Either way, make sure you measure your kitchen dimensions to be sure it fits.
  12. Upgrade your laundry room—Add more storage features to help improve the look and usability of your laundry room. You can add a folding table, and create storage your laundry essentials like detergent and fabric softener. While you’re at it, add a little décor to the room. You likely spend a lot of time doing laundry, so why not do it in a warm and welcoming space.
  13. Update your lighting—replace old light bulbs throughout the house. Install dimmers to create mood lighting in areas such as the dining room. Upgrade old lighting fixtures and lamps with new ones to match your style.
  14. Pressure wash—Use a pressure washer to clean the exterior of your home, your driveway and your walkways to get rid of built up dirt, mud, mold, and other buildup. Don’t have a pressure washer? You can rent one from a hardware store.
